Creating your own website can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. It does not have to be as daunting a task as it seems as there is software available as well as plenty of help. Even if you have no experience whatsoever, it is relatively straightforward to create a website yourself rather than pay a lot of money for a professional.

Creating a website can be almost as easy as writing a document. You choose your background and theme and…

...off you go.

Saying that, there are a few basic rules as to works well and what doesn't, especially when it comes to small business e-commerce. Here are some tips about how to make your own website:

How to make Your Own Website Tip 1: Website Design
Have you ever visited a webpage where it's virtually impossible to find what you're looking for because there are so many banner ads, flashing things or loud colors on the screen to distract you? This is an immediate turn off to a visitor for two reasons. Firstly because a simple webpage is so much more enjoyable to read and secondly because if you are in small business e-commerce, a website like this just looks unprofessional. If your visitors hate
your website, they are not likely to spend very long there or buy anything!

How to make Your Own Website Tip 2: Colors and Fonts
You might have hundreds of colors and fonts available to use but this doesn't mean you have to use them all! A good, professional-looking website will stick to one font (possibly two) in a legible size and use a suitable background. Flashing backgrounds are best used on personal homepages rather than small business e-commerce websites. Don't use bright colors.
Avoid fonts that are hard to read. Remember too that if you use an obscure font, it might look totally different on another screen or be displayed as another font altogether. Use simple fonts, such as Verdana, Times New Roman or Arial. Background colors should make the text easy to read. If your background is dark blue or black, a white or yellow font is fine. If your background is pale, stick to a black or dark font.

How to make Your Own Website Tip 3: Home Page
It is vital to avoid having too much on your homepage. Keep it simple. With small business e-commerce, you are selling a service or a product. Your homepage should be a straightforward introduction. You might want to have some advertising (such as Google Adsense) somewhere on your website to earn extra money but avoid flooding the home page with either that or other people's flashing banner ads! It looks unprofessional and detracts from the main purpose of your website. Keep the colors and fonts reader-friendly.

How to make Your Own Website Tip 4: Other Web Pages

This might sound obvious but creating a multi-page website can seem intimidating, even to people with some experience. With small business e-commerce, perhaps your budget isn't going to stretch to a professional web designer and you want to do it yourself. Plan what you want your website to look like. First create the homepage and then decide on any other pages. Other pages might include:

• Services (or products) on offer
• Pricing
• Order page
• Testimonials
• How to contact us

If you are worried about how to make your own website, remember to start small. Make a basic plan of what you want to say on the website and what pages you want (write it all down first if you prefer to work that way) and then create one page at a time. By creating your small business e-commerce website yourself, you will save a lot of money on hiring a professional
and be able to make your website exactly as you want it. You can also alter or update it yourself without having to wait for the professional to do
so. Creating your website gives you plenty of freedom and can be quite enjoyable too!
